The Challenge: The EOD Technology Directorate of the Army’s Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal requested employs a bomb disposal robot called the Talon, developed by Foster-Miller. For this type of equipment a virtual trainer is essential to training soldiers efficiently and cost effectively.
Our Solution: Our solution was to create a physically based 3D simulation which can be controlled by the actual Talon control deck, an X-Box controller or a keyboard. The ability to use a USB-based control surface that mirrors the actual operator controls for the Talon robot was essential to the relevance and accuracy of the training. Obstacles were developed to the operator with common tasks, such as:
- Picking up ordinance
- Traversing uneven terrain
- Climbing stairs
- Navigating tight corridor
- Operating under low light conditions
